To establish the existence of Allah ﷻ, we must analyse reality using reason, observation, and divine revelation. Everything within existence follows fixed laws, has limitations, and is dependent. For anything to exist at all, there must be something beyond these restrictions—an eternal, independent Creator.
1. The Universe is Governed by Fixed Laws
A. The Laws of Physics Are Precise and Unchanging
One of the most profound aspects of the universe is the existence of consistent and fixed laws:
Gravity consistently pulls objects towards one another.
The speed of light remains constant at approximately 299,792,458 metres per second.
The charge of an electron is fixed and does not change.
The consistency of these laws suggests deliberate design rather than random emergence. As Allah ﷻ states in the Qur'an:
"It is not allowable for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming." — [Surah Ya-Sin 36:40]
This verse highlights the precise order of the cosmos, pointing towards intentional design.
B. The Laws of Physics Require a Lawmaker
Laws logically imply the existence of a lawmaker. The precision and constancy of these cosmic laws point toward an intelligent Creator:
"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the Earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding." — [Surah Ali 'Imran 3:190]
2. The Universe is Limited and Had a Beginning
A. Scientific and Rational Evidence for a Beginning
The Expanding Universe: Modern cosmology and the Big Bang framework confirm that the universe originated from a finite initial point, establishing that space-time had an absolute beginning.
Causality: Whatever begins to exist must have a cause. The universe began to exist; therefore, it must have a cause external to itself.
The Qur'an presents this rational challenge directly:
"Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]?" — [Surah At-Tur 52:35]
B. The Divine Source of Creation
The Qur'an addresses the beginning of existence and affirms that the universe has an active, sustaining Originator:
"Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is, over all things, Disposer of affairs." — [Surah Az-Zumar 39:62]
3. The Universe Operates on Cause and Effect
A. Universal Dependency
Everything observed within the universe exists in a state of contingency and dependency:
Plants depend on sunlight and soil minerals.
Herbivores depend on plant life; carnivores depend on prey.
Life depends on atmospheric conditions, water cycles, and fine-tuned planetary distances.
This profound interdependence demonstrates that nothing in physical reality is self-sufficient (Al-Ghani).
B. The Necessity of an Independent Being
An infinite regress of dependent causes is rationally impossible. If every cause requires a prior cause to bring it into existence, nothing would ever begin to exist in the first place. Therefore, there must be a primary, uncaused Cause who is inherently self-sustaining:
"It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then He established Himself above the Throne. You have not besides Him any protector or intercessor; so will you not be reminded?" — [Surah As-Sajdah 32:4]
4. The Impossibility of an Infinite Physical Universe
An actual infinite set of physical events cannot exist in concrete reality:
Temporal Finitude: If the past were composed of an infinite series of moments, traversing it to arrive at today would be impossible. The reality of the present moment proves that the past had a definitive starting point.
Cosmic Origin: The expansion of spacetime confirms the universe is not eternal in the past; it erupted into existence from a singular beginning:
"Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?" — [Surah Al-Anbiya 21:30]
5. The Necessity of an Eternal, Independent Creator
Because the universe is bounded, temporal, and contingent, the only rational explanation is the existence of an uncaused, eternal, and independent Originator: Allah ﷻ.
Core Rational Attributes of the Creator:
Eternality (Al-Awwal / Al-Akhir): Without beginning and without end.
Self-Sufficiency (Al-Qayyum): Completely independent of all creation, while all creation depends on Him.
Transcendence (Al-Aliyy): Distinct from creation, existing beyond physical time, space, and matter.
"He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing." — [Surah Al-Hadid 57:3]
6. The Importance of Understanding the Existence of Allah
A. An Innate Disposition (Fitrah)
Human beings possess an intrinsic drive to seek truth, purpose, and origin. Allah ﷻ has endowed humanity with reason to perceive His signs across the universe.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Every child is born upon fitrah (natural disposition), and it is his parents who make him a Jew, a Christian, or a Magian." — [Sahih Muslim 2658]
While belief in a supreme Creator is seeded in human nature, utilizing reasoned observation strengthens that foundation into unshakeable certainty (Yaqeen).
B. The Qur'anic Call to Intellectual Reflection
The Qur'an repeatedly commands reflection rather than blind dogmatism:
"And on the earth are signs for those of certainty, and within yourselves. Then will you not see?" — [Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:20–21]
"Do they not reflect within themselves? Allah created the heavens and the earth and everything between them in truth and for an appointed term." — [Surah Ar-Rum 30:8]
Conclusion
Understanding the existence of Allah ﷻ is both an intellectual realization and an essential human requirement. By observing the cosmos through sound reason, one recognizes unmistakable order, non-random physical laws, causality, and profound limits—all pointing definitively to an eternal, independent Maker.
Acknowledging Allah’s existence aligns our intellect with ultimate reality. Faith anchored in sound reason and revelation gives life genuine purpose, moral clarity, and enduring connection with the Creator.
